
Gardner-Webb Adds Transfer Lucas Stieber

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb continues to bolster its roster for the 2022-2023 season as the Runnin' Bulldogs announced on Tuesday the signing of transfer guard Lucas Stieber.
Stieber (Green Bay, Wisc. / Southwest HS) joins Gardner-Webb after playing the last two seasons at University of Wisconsin Green Bay in the Horizon League where he was named to the all-freshman team in 2020-2021. Including a redshirt season in 2019, he earned his undergraduate degree in three years and will now join the 'Dawgs in Boiling Springs with three years of athletic eligibility still remaining.
"Lucas is an elite passer of the basketball and will be a tremendous asset to our team," said head coach Tim Craft. "He also demonstrates unique leadership abilities and a strong sense of maturity that underscore the type of winning intangibles that will help our program be successful."
Checking in at 6'3", Stieber played in 53 career games and made 39 starts during his two active seasons with the Phoenix.
Becoming an immediate impact player as a freshman, he averaged 3.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game while posting a strong 3.2 assist/turnover ratio and dishing out at least five assists on eight separate occasions, including a season-best eight assists against Northern Kentucky. Utilizing his length, he also registered at least one block in 13 games, highlighted by three blocks apiece against IUPUI and the University of Illinois Chicago.
Stieber continued to showcase his abilities in the backcourt as a sophomore. He reached the single-season century mark for assists for the first time and led Green Bay for a second consecutive season with a team-high 3.5 assists per game while adding 4.1 points and 2.9 rebounds. He recorded a career-high 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting at Wright State, and also posted a career-best mark with nine assists against FIU, one of nine games last season in which he eclipsed five assists.
For his career, Stieber shoots it at 37.7 percent clip from the field, 30.3 percent from distance and 71.0 percent from the free throw line.
Prior to his stint at Green Bay, Stieber starred locally at Southwest High School where he was named to top senior defender in the state as part of the Wisconsin Sports Network Senior Basketball Awards. He earned first team all-Fox River Classic Conference and led Green Bay Southwest to its first conference crown since 2001.
