Zack Byers Begins NCAA Quest Monday Morning At Palm Beach Regional
May 15, 2022 | Men's Golf
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Gardner-Webb senior Zack Byers will begin play at the NCAA Men's Golf Regional on Monday morning at the PGA National Resort.
Byers (Shelby, N.C. / Shelby HS) will tee off at 9:20 am on the first hole and will be paired with Brett Inserra (Loyola Maryland) and Caleb Loudin (Charleston Southern). Byers is one of five individuals competing at the Palm Beach Regional, along with Ross Funderburke (Furman), Tobias Johnson (Mercer), Henrik Lilja (Campbell) and Nick Lyerly (UNC Greensboro).
The course features a 7,048-yard layout (Par 72), with Florida Atlantic University and the Palm Beach County Sports Commission serving as regional hosts.
The Palm Beach Regional is one of six regionals being held from May 16-18 around the country. A total of 14 teams and five individuals are competing in Palm Beach Gardens over 54 holes. The low five teams and low individual not on one of those five teams will advance to the NCAA Championships on May 27 in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Grayhawk Golf Club will host that event.
Byers qualified for the NCAA Regionals by winning medalist honors at the recent Big South Conference Championships. He dominated play for Gardner-Webb this season as the fourth-year standout registered a trio of tournament victories and four top-10 finishes overall, tied for the second most of any golfer in the Big South this season.
Byers was the only golfer in the conference to complete a tournament double-digits under par (-10), and rounded out the year with the second lowest stroke average of all Big South competitors. He was named Big South Men's Golfer of the Week three separate times, all of which came during the most recent spring season.
Byers proved to be a consistent force for Gardner-Webb, firing the lowest round of any GWU player in all five tournaments this spring, as well as nine of 10 tournaments overall this season (including twice tying with a teammate for the lowest finish). He boosted the Runnin' Bulldogs to five top-10 team finishes overall and three top-3 results in the final four tournaments, including a second-place in the Big South Championship.
