PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Gardner-Webb senior Zack Byers birdied two of his final three holes on Monday to finish in a five-way tie for 10th in the opening round of the 2022 NCAA West Palm Beach Regional.
The 54-hole tournament will resume with the second round on Tuesday morning.
Byers (Shelby, N.C. / Shelby HS) is one of five individuals playing at the PGA National Champion Course, a par 72, 7,048-yard layout. There are 14 teams in the field, with Vanderbilt easing to a five-stroke lead in those standings by day's end.
The top five teams will advance to the NCAA National Championship tournament later this month in Scottsdale, Ariz. The top individual finisher not on a top-five team will also advance to Scottsdale.
Byers shot even par on Monday, sinking five birdie putts – including three on the back nine – to pull into the top-10 by the end of his round. He heated up after the turn, shooting a four on the Par 5 10th hole. After two consecutive bogeys, he rallied with three even par holes before getting home with birdies on the 16th and 18th.
Byers is tied with Davis Chatfield (Notre Dame), Fred Biondi (Florida), Luke Gifford (South Florida) and Reid Davenport (Vanderbilt), and sits just five strokes behind individual leader Nick Lyerly (UNC Greensboro).
Byers had the second-best round of any golfer on Par 5 holes, shooting three under par (4.25 stroke average). His five birdies were tied for third overall.
The Palm Beach Regional is one of six being played this week around the country.
