Gardner-Webb's Byers Within Striking Distance After Second Day At NCAA Regional
May 17, 2022 | Men's Golf
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Gardner-Webb senior Zack Byers went low on Tuesday at the 2022 NCAA Palm Beach Regional, firing a 70 to pull within striking distance of the leaders in the second round.
Byers (Shelby, N.C. / Shelby HS) is in a four-way tie for sixth overall after two days and trails Notre Dame's Davis Chatfield by just one stroke for the coveted lone individual qualifying spot. The top five of the region's 14 competing teams will advance to Scottsdale, Ariz., later this month.
The low scorer among all golfers not on those top five teams will also advance to Scottsdale. Vanderbilt, Florida State, Florida, South Florida and College of Charleston are in those positions after Tuesday's round. Notre Dame is two shots behind that group in sixth.
Byers blistered the PGA National Champion Course Tuesday morning, sinking four birdie putts to sit 3-under par at the turn. He birdied the 10th hole to get to 4-under before a pair of bogeys on the back nine slowed his pace. Byers regained his form and shot par over the final four holes to finish with a strong round of 70.
He moved up four spots in the individual standings with his day. He is tied with Notre Dame golfer Taichi Kho and Florida State's Brett Roberts. UNC Greensboro's Nick Lyerly (143) and San Diego's Charlie Reiter (143) are one shot back in a tie for ninth.
Byers will begin the final round on Wednesday morning at 10:04 am. He is paired with Charleston Southern's Griffin Tarver (34th) and Carolo Pizzano (56th). The trio will start on the first hole.
