ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb dropped the series finale on Sunday afternoon at UNC Asheville with the host Bulldogs jumping out to an early lead and avoiding the sweep with a 7-1 decision.
Gardner-Webb won its second Big South series – and first on the road – with a big rally late Saturday. The Runnin' Bulldogs bats went cold on Sunday, however, managing just two hits on a tough offensive afternoon.
UNC Asheville scored on a solo home run in the top of the first by freshman Robbie Burnett and went up 3-0 in the third inning when Burnett hit a two-run homer to the opposite field. An RBI single pushed the lead to 4-0, and the home team added two more runs in the fourth to pull away.
Gardner-Webb got on the board in the sixth when
Jacob Marcos was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. The Miami, Fla., speedster moved to second on a wild pitch and over to third on a ground ball. He scored on
Alec Burns' RBI groundout to second to trim Asheville's lead to 6-1.
The Runnin' Bulldogs did not have another man reach until the top of the ninth, when
Curtis Robison and
Daegan Brady coaxed back-to-back walks with two outs. UNC Asheville ended the game without any further damage.
Luke Osteen got the start for Gardner-Webb and was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in 2.0 innings of work.
Casey Young, Michael Portella and
Connor Gleeson closed out the game for GWU on the mound.
Burns and
AJ Jones each went 1-for-4 to pace Gardner-Webb at the plate. The Runnin' Bulldogs also drew four walks.
Jacob Edwards was the winning pitcher for UNC Asheville, twirling 8.0 strong innings and allowing just one run on two hits. He struck out eight and walked a pair.
Burnett was the man of the day offensively for the Bulldogs, going 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and three RBI. UNC Asheville collected 11 hits overall, with PJ Heintz also enjoying a solid afternoon with a 2-for-4 effort.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Tuesday night, traveling to face North Carolina at 6:00 pm in Chapel Hill. The game will stream live on ACC Network Xtra.
