HIGH POINT, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb track and field team is off to a strong start on day one of the 2022 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championship, as it was filled with several podium finishes, program records, and personal bests.
In the men's decathlon, Cameron Donoghue currently sits in second-place, just 43 points out of first-place. The Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts native placed third in the 100-meter (11.66), first in the long jump (6.50 meters), fourth in the shot put (11.74), second in the high jump (1.86 meters), and first in the 400-meter (50.31). Donoghue will compete in the back half of the men's decathlon tomorrow.
As for the women's heptathlon,
Khalilah Conway currently sits in second-place, just 42 points out of first-place. The Dumfries, Virginia native placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.29), first in the high jump (1.61 meters), third in the shot put (10.42 meters), and second in the 200-meter (26.04). Conway will wrap up the remaining three events of the women's heptathlon tomorrow.
Josh Fischer placed second in the men's hammer by hitting a distance of 57.08 meters. Fischer's mark is a new personal best and replaces his current top-six all-time program record. Nate Wonsley took eighth in the event with a new personal best mark of 48.67 meters.
In the women's hammer throw,
Autumn Drayton solidified third-place by hitting a mark of 53.65 meters. Drayton's mark is a new personal best and a new top-five all-time program record.
As for the men's javelin, Donoghue took seventh with a personal best mark of 50.89 meters, which is a new top-five all-time program record.
In the women's 10,000-meter,
Chloe McDaniel ran a top-ten all-time program record wit ha time of 42:32.87 at the finish.
In the women's 1,500-meter run,
Faith Parandhamaia ran a top-eight all-time program record of 4:55.78, and Camile Sykes (5:03.19) ran a new personal best time.
As for the men's 1,500-meter run,
Ryan Morita qualified for finals with a time of 4:01.36, which is a new personal best and top-ten all time program record.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action tomorrow for day two of the 2022 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
