Gardner-Webb Trio Earns Big South Conference Football Weekly Awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb's second near upset in as many years of an FBS foe produced Big South Conference Football weekly accolades for a trio of Runnin' Bulldogs Monday.

Quarterback Bailey Fisher (Clayton, Ga. / Rabun County HS) was named Offensive Player of the Week, safety Jamari Brown (Miami, Fla. / Eastside (Ga.) HS) was named Defensive Player of the Week and kicker Jay Billingsley (Anderson, S.C. / T.L. Hanna HS) was the Freshman of the Week.

Fisher nearly engineered Gardner-Webb's second ever FBS win, passing for a career-high 403 yards and accounting for three touchdowns in a 31-27 loss to former Big South foe Coastal Carolina.

His five-yard rushing touchdown with just over 10 minutes to play in the game put Gardner-Webb up 27-24. He also scored on a four-yard run and hit Cutrell Haywood in the first half for a five-yard touchdown pass. His efforts helped Gardner-Webb roll to 495 yards of total offense, including 448 through the air as a team against the Chanticleers.

Fisher completed 16 passes that went for first downs, including 10 of more than 20 yards and two of longer that 53 yards in the game. His big game was the third-best passing effort in school history, tied with Hall of Famer Jeremy Martin's 403-effort in a win at No. 23 New Hampshire on November 11, 2000.

It was only the fifth 400-yard passing game in Gardner-Webb history. The performance powered Gardner-Webb to its highest offensive output ever against an FBS foe.

Brown was all over the field on Saturday at Coastal Carolina, finishing with a pair of forced turnovers in a narrow 31-27 loss to the Chanticleers.

His 17-yard fumble recovery and return set up a game-tying field goal in the second quarter and his 54-yard interception return set GWU up inside the Chanticleers' red zone late in the second quarter. Brown initially scored on the play, but that was negagated by a hold behind the play at the seven-yard line.

Billingsley connected on a pair of field goals and all three of his PAT attempts in Gardner-Webb's 31-27 loss at Coastal Carolina Saturday night. His 47-yarder with 6:10 to play before halftime tied the game, 3-3. His 29-yarder with 1:15 to play in the third cut Coastal's lead to 24-20.

Billingsley's selection marked the second time in two games that a GWU rookie had been named Freshman of the Week.

Gardner-Webb (1-1) will play its first FCS foe on Saturday, September 17, traveling to face a strong Elon team at 6:00 pm. The game will stream live on FloSports and will air live on WGNC Radio 1450 AM / 101.1 FM with Dave Friedman and Reggie Walker.
