Furman Defeats Gardner-Webb 2-1 on Friday Night Showdown

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Furman Paladins made the short drive up I-85 on Friday night and battled to a 2-1 win over Gardner-Webb from Greene-Harbison Stadium. Owen Zaldivar scored the GWU's goal during the evening in his first action of the season.

"Furman is a very strong team that got picked to finish second in the SoCon," said Head Coach Tony Setzer. "We played them toe-to-toe, controlled possession, and outshot them by 10, but just couldn't find the back of the net again in the second half.

The Paladins got on the board first in the 17th minute of play off a goal by Slade Starnes. The opportunity developed from a GWU foul that led to Callum Holland delivering a direct kick to Jake Raine who was able to find Starnes to tap in for the goal.

The Runnin' Bulldogs were able to break through on the board after Pablo Brimeux flicked the ball to Aymane Sordo who was able to put Zaldivar in a one-on-one with the Furman keeper. Zaldivar chipped the ball into the right of the net, equalizing the match at one in the 31st minute.

Furman didn't shy away from the GWU goal as Holland scored the decisive go-ahead goal within 100 seconds of the match being tied. Stearns found Holland, beat a defender, pushed the ball to his right, and smashed the ball into the right of the goal. Furman took a 2-1 lead into the half.

The second half saw Gardner-Webb start to dial up the pressure on the attacking third of the pitch. The Runnin' Bulldogs took 11 shots during this period and had six corner kicks. Despite the 11 chances, none were able to be put on goal.

The play was aggressive from the start as 30 fouls were called during the 90 minutes of play between the two teams. There were two yellow cards distributed to each team as well, both of GWU's in the first half, and both of Furman's in the second.

"For a new team like ours, we are showing a lot of improvement already and we should continue to build as we spend more time on the field together," said Setzer.

Gardner-Webb's next game will be on Wednesday, September 7 at Queens at 6:00 p.m. as they will start a six-game road trip running through the remainder of the month.
