ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb (6-4-2) fell to UNC Asheville (3-4-3) by a final score of 1-0 Saturday in Asheville, N.C. Bulldogs Midfielder Brooklyn Scythes broke free and scored the game's only goal in the 70
th minute.
The Runnin' Bulldogs' 20 shots were double UNC Asheville's 10. They also led in shots on goal with six but ultimately failed to capitalize.
"That was a tough one not to get any points out of," said head coach
Mike Varga. "I thought we had the better of the play but just couldn't find the back of the net."
Gardner-Webb's offense applied pressure behind
Maddie Turlington's 10 shots,
Klara Ovefelt's five, and
Ainsley Sutherland's two. A trio of Runnin' Bulldogs --
Lina Ullen,
Carina Leal, and
Autumn Woodard -- had one shot each.
Freshman goalkeeper
Chloe Leffler kept Asheville off the board in the first half. She faced 10 shots and tallied two saves before conceding the only goal late in the match. Her record shifted to 5-2-0 following the loss.
"Asheville hung in and hit an incredible shot to go up with 20 minutes left. We still had chances to get the equalizer but just couldn't find it," said Varga.
The Runnin' Bulldogs are next in action at Big South opponent Longwood on Wednesday, September 28. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
