GWU Falls at Longwood 64-59 on Wednesday Evening

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb traveled to face the conference-leading Longwood Lancers on Wednesday night and fell 64-59 to the hosts. The loss puts the Runnin' Bulldogs at 3-4 within Big South play as they approach the halfway point in the league slate.

After allowing the first five points of the evening, GWU responded with a 12-point run to take an early 12-5 lead. The Runnin' Bulldogs were able to stretch their lead to as many as 11 over in the first half. Julian Soumaoro converted five shots from deep to score 15 during the first twenty minutes.

Longwood opened the half on an 11-2 run to take a 39-36 advantage, their first lead since early in the game. The two teams traded the lead a few times before the Lancers were able to get some distance and take an eight-point lead.

Ludovic Dufeal was able to cut Longwood's lead to a point with 2:44 to play with the score at 60-59. Neither team was able to convert on their next pair of possessions, but Zac Watson hit on a jumper to put them up by three with a minute left.

GWU called a timeout with 60 seconds to play and draw up the play. The ball found Soumaoro behind the arc on an attempt to tie it, but it missed with the Lancers pulling down the rebound. Longwood was fouled and converted each of their free throws to ice the game and seal their sixth win of the year.

Soumaoro led the team with 18 points and Caleb Robinson was next on the team with ten. Kareem Reid finished with a team-high three blocks while Lucas Stieber led the team dishing four assists.

Each team pulled down 27 boards while GWU turned it over 18 times to LU's 14. Longwood outscored GWU in the paint 34-22 and 11-3 in second-chance points. GWU converted 10 threes and shot 41.7% from deep and held the Lancers to 3-14 (21.4%) from three.
