Gardner-Webb Women Take 61-59 Win Over Campbell Wednesday To Remain In First

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Lauren Bevis' jumper with 19.2 seconds left gave Gardner-Webb the lead for good and delivered the Runnin' Bulldogs a 61-59 win over Campbell Wednesday night.

Gardner-Webb (11-4, 3-0 Big South) is off to its best start in league play since going 3-0 in the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2007-2008 and sits alone in first place after the win.

The Runnin' Bulldogs also improved to 6-0 inside Paul Porter Arena this season.

All-America candidate Jhessyka Williams led the way once again with 19 points and 13 rebounds, Alasia Smith added 17 points and 11 boards and Bevis joined Ki'Ari Cain with 10 points. Cain added seven assists and turned the basketball over only once in 38 key minutes.

Gardner-Webb fell behind early on, as Campbell took a comfortable 19-6 lead after the first quarter. The Runnin' Bulldogs fought back quickly, going on a 19-9 run to open the second quarter to pull within three at the 4:18 mark.

The two teams battled over the next four minutes, but the Camels (7-7, 2-1 Big South) led 30-29 at the break.

Bevis drained a three to open the third quarter and Gardner-Webb surged in front by five after another Bevis trey with 7:43 left in the quarter. Campbell heated up, shooting 53.8 percent for the quarter to lead 49-45 heading into the fourth.

Gardner-Webb had another early run to start the final period, getting back-to-back layups from Cain and Smith to tie the score less than 90 seconds in. A layup by Gianni Boone put Campbell back in front, buit a wide open Smith drained a three-pointer from the right wing with 7:21 to go to give Gardner-Webb a 52-51 advantage.

Williams followed with four quick points – and Smith followed with another shot close to the rim for a 58-52 lead with 4:28 left in the game.

Campbell responded with a steady 6-0 run to tie the game on a bucket by Christabel Ezumah with 1:45 to play and – after the teams traded defensive stops – Ezumah was fouled with 44.1 seconds left.

Her first free throw missed, but she made the second to give Campbell a 59-58 lead. Gardner-Webb set up a play, and Bevis delivered with her bucket late in the shot clock to put GWU ahead for good.

A strong defensive stand gave Gardner-Webb possession and – after an inbounds play – Cain was fouled with 1.1 seconds left. She made her first free throw, but missed the second and Campbell called timeout after the rebound with 0.9 on the clock.

An inbounds play lob inside to Ezumah was knocked away and Gardner-Webb held on for the win.

The Runnin' Bulldogs shot 33.8 percent for the game (23-of-68) and turned 21 Campbell turnovers into 21 points in transition. GWU also had 15 rebounds on the offensive glass – led by Williams' nine – but turned those into just seven second-chance points.

Campbell finished at 47.7 percent for the game (21-of-44) and held a slight edge on the glass, but were hampered by Gardner-Webb's pressure.

Ezumah finished with a team-high 14 points and nine rebounds in just 21 minutes due to foul trouble. Audrey Fuller had nine points, nine rebounds and a pair of assists and both Brittany Staves and Erika Joseph had nine points in the loss.

Gardner-Webb hits the road on Saturday, traveling to face Radford (5-9, 1-2 Big South) at 2:00 pm in Virginia (ESPN+). Jon Gross will have the radio call on ESPNCLT.com.
