BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Radford held on for a 63-59 win at Gardner-Webb. The Runnin' Bulldogs' last-second chance was unable to fall as GWU falls to 2-2 in conference play.
After a physical first half, the Highlanders took their largest lead of the period into the halftime break. The Highlanders led 33-28 after Kenyon Giles hit a three-pointer in the final minute of the half. RU shot 14-29 (48.3%) from the floor while GWU went 11-24 (45.8%) in the first twenty minutes.
In the second half, a jumper by DaQuan Smith pushed their lead to ten with 13:44 left to play in regulation. GWU cut the Radford advantage to 51-50 as
Ludovic Dufeal made a layup after a
DQ Nicholas assist. The Highlanders were unable to score over almost a four-minute stretch, leading to the GWU run to cut the lead to one.
The Runnin' Bulldogs were able to keep Radford within striking distance for the final five minutes, not letting them get up by more than four points.
In the final minute,
Kareem Reid converted a second-chance basket off a Nicholas assist from inside the paint to cut the deficit to two. On the Highlanders' ensuing possession, Josiah Jeffers drove to the basket and had his shot sent back by Dufeal leading to timeouts by GWU and RU to set up the play.
Selden drove straight to the rim off the inbounds, put it off the glass and the ball rolled out with RU's Justin Archer pulling down the board, getting fouled, and converting both shots of his one-and-one to seal the win.
Nicholas led the team with 17 while
Julien Soumaoro and Reid had 14 and 10 respectively. Nicholas also led the team in assists finishing with five. Dufeal had three blocks and added a pair of steals.
Radford beat Gardner-Webb on the boards 29-23 while RU turned it over 14 times to GWU's 12. The 'Dogs converted five offensive rebounds into 12 second-chance points.
Gardner-Webb looks to break their two-game skid as they hit the road to play at Presbyterian (1-3) on Wednesday, January 11 at 7:00 p.m.
