BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw on Saturday night against the Panthers of High Point University.
Pablo Brimeux tied the team high in goals scored in the match.
"It is a very positive performance, said coach Wells. "We grinded. We played for the university tonight. We have been talking about building our culture and wanted guys that want to be here and tonight, even on the bench, the energy was fantastic. I was extremely proud of them. In the first half we were fantastic. I think in the first 15 minutes we were high energy winning first and second balls and that is where the goal came. We deserved it. Then you know High Point have got a quality team and they're very experienced. I think they have about 10 seniors. Its like, how do you weather the storm? In the second half unfortunately the wind was going in their favor. It caused a lot of corners for sure, but again resilience. That is part of building our culture is resilience. We were unbeaten again in conference play, and I do think this is a positive sign moving forward."
The Runnin' Bulldogs generated chances fast and early in the match. Sophomore forward
Pablo Brimeux scored his third goal of the season in the seventh minute as
Caio Hughes positioned the ball for him to score on the left side. High Point drew even in the 61
st minute with Tony Pineda scoring for the Panthers. Despite a series of late game attacks from HPU, Gardner-Webb held firm on defense to earn the draw. Brimeux is tied for the lead in goals scored on the year with his teammates
Santiago Hoyos and
Jaylen Orr.
The Runnin' Bulldogs continue their season on Saturday, Oct. 21 when they travel to USC Upstate. Kickoff will be at 7:00 p.m.
