Gardner-Webb Downs UNC Asheville 1-0

Runnin’ Bulldogs earn first Big South win

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University women's soccer team defeated the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville by a final score 1-0 on Saturday evening. Megan Gettys tallied the goal to lift GWU to victory.

"The girls worked really hard for that win tonight," said coach Murphy. "I'm proud of them. The way they just attacked so well, dominated possession, worked really hard; we deserved to win tonight, and it was a fun moment for us."

Gardner-Webb got out to an early start putting shots on goal. Sophomore forward Megan Gettys stole the ball from a UNC Asheville defender in the 25th minute and was able to score a long unassited goal over the head of goalkeeper Grace Murray. This was the lone goal of the contest as Gardner-Webb secured the win keeping pressure on in the second half. Gettys' tallied her forth goal of the season, which leads the team. Abby Clark, Lily Stegall and Julianna Jatkola also recorded shots on goal for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Freshman goalkeeper Jamie Martin earned her first career clean sheet for Gardner-Webb. The win marks the first win in conference play for GWU in 2023 and marks Head Coach Tina Murphy's first Big South victory at the helm of GWU.

"The shutout was important," added coach Murphy. "Jamie came up big for us tonight in her organization of the box. That was really good."

The Runnin' Bulldogs are back home on Wednesday, Oct. 18 against High Point University at 7:00 p.m.
