
Runnin’ Bulldogs Entertain Elon for their 2023-24 Home Opener

Gardner-Webb continue non-conference play against local Phoenix
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb's women's basketball team tips off its home opener on Saturday afternoon, November 11 at 1:00 p.m. tipping in the Paul Porter Arena against Elon University. Saturday's game will air live on the Varsity Network App, GWUSports.com/listenlive, and ESPNCLT.com with Mike Foiles calling the action for the Runnin' Bulldogs Sports Network. The game will also stream live on ESPN+ (WatchESPN.com) with Mark Binetti and Sarah Jansen on the call.
'DAWG WATCH
Head coach Scott Merritt will entertain the Phoenix for his first game at the Paul Porter Arena after a tough road visit to #16 North Carolina, 102-49, opened their season.
In their first contest of the season, senior guard Micahla Funderburk led the way offensively scoring 16 points, tying her career-high. She shot 4-of-10 from the floor, all four makes coming from three-point land, and also nailed all four of her free throw attempts. Junior guard Ashley Hawkins posted 14 points, shot 40 percent from the floor, and knocked down all six of her charity stripe trips. The Runnin' Bulldogs (0-1) also went 14-14 at the free throw line.
On the glass, the 'Dawgs pulled in 33 rebounds against a powerful Tar Heel squad with graduate student forward Ramatoulaye Keita and sophomore forward Grace Pack each recording five rebounds apiece in the season opener.
THE VISITING PHOENIX
The Elon Phoenix enter Saturday's game at 0-1 with a 68-37 loss to East Carolina University. Last season Elon posted a record of 9-21 falling in the first round of the CAA Tournament to Stony Brook University 54-51. Elon leads the all-time series against the Runnin' Bulldogs 14-10 with the Phoenix 2-0 against the Runnin' Bulldogs under Head Coach Charlotte Smith. Elon has won the last six matchups between the teams, most recently on Dec. 20, 2021, when the Phoenix beat Gardner-Webb 77-65 in the Schar Center. The 'Dawgs last win over the Phoenix came on February 7, 1996 (61-54). The series is tied 6-6 when the Phoenix travel to Boiling Springs.

Following this home stand against the Phoenix, Gardner-Webb will continue to face non-conference opponents with Richmond University traveling to Boiling Springs on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 11:00 a.m.
