Gardner-Webb Travels to Take on Queens

Runnin’ Bulldogs preparing for tip off against the Royals

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University men's basketball team is set to continue their non-conference slate on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at the Queens University of Charlotte at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday's game will stream live on ESPN+ (WatchESPN.com), with the radio call broadcast live on 730 The Game (ESPN Charlotte 730 AM), the Varsity Network App, GWUSports.com/listenlive, and ESPNCLT.com. The Voice of the Runnin' Bulldogs Phil Constantino and Jim Mojo Morrison will be on the call for radio.
 
SCOUTING THE ROYALS.
The Queens Royals enter Wednesday's match up with the same record as Gardner-Webb at 3-4. Queens' wins have come against High Point University (Nov. 14), Fairfield (Nov. 18), and Fairleigh Dickinson University (Nov. 22). Their losses have come against Marshall University (Nov. 6), South Illinois University (Nov. 10), Drexel University, (Nov. 19), and the University of Richmond (Nov. 25). Last season Queens posted a record of 18-15 and reached the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship tournament where they lost to Kennesaw State University. Head Coach Grant Leonard is in his second season at the helm of the Queens men's basketball program with a record of 21-19. Prior to that Leonard had served as Associate Head Men's Basketball Coach since 2016. Gardner-Webb has a 2-2 record all-time against Queens. This will be the first meeting between the Runnin' Bulldogs and Royals since Nov. 18, 1995 with Queens winning 76-72. The two programs played four seasons in a row from 1992-1993 to 1995-1996.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Most recently, the 'Dawgs earned a home victory over Limestone on Saturday, Nov. 25. After a few empty possessions at the start, Julien Soumaoro and Caleb Robinson got the 'Dawgs offense going as Gardner-Webb went on a 15-9 run in the opening 10 minutes. Greg Mckay allowed the Saints to reach 15 points before the Runnin' Bulldogs began to heat up toward the end of the first half going on a 25-10 run lead led by Quest Aldridge, Lucas Stieber and DQ Nicholas. GWU held a 42-19 lead at the half.
 
Gardner-Webb continued to build the lead in the second half extending it to 32 points by the 14:12 mark. GWU saw contributions from all over the floor down the stretch with Brendan Mykalcio, Darryl Simmons II, Isaiah Robinson, and Cheickna Sissoko tallying field goals. Taku Youngblood and Chance Thacker would also tally their first points of the season late in the contest. Gardner-Webb ultimately pulled away to defeat Limestone 92-51.
 
'DAWG WATCH
Seven games into the season, Gardner-Webb is averaging 72.0 points-per-game, 39.7 rebounds per game and 13.1 assists. Julien Soumaoro leads the 'Dawgs in scoring with 98 points. He is averaging 14.0 points-per-game and is third on the team in assists with 16. Caleb Robinson is second on the team in points with 86, and a team leading 37 rebounds. He is averaging 5.3 rebounds-per-game. DQ Nicholas is third in scoring with 54, with Brendan Mykalcio in fourth with 43. GWU newcomer Isaiah Richards is fifth with 42 points, and leads the team in field goal percentage at .842. Among the Runnin' Bulldog freshman, Darryl Simmons II is making his presence known with 39 points and 10 assists thus far. Four different 'Dawgs tallied double-digits in the victory over Limestone. DQ Nicholas and Caleb Robison led the way each putting up 15. Darryl Simmons II scored 12, and Julien Soumaoro continued his early season hot streak with 11.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Following Queens, Gardner-Webb will return home to Paul Porter Arena for a three game home stand against Western Carolina University (Dec. 2), Wofford College (Dec. 6), and North Greenville University (Dec. 11).
