Runnin’ Bulldogs Return Home for Furman on Wednesday Night

‘Dawgs welcome Paladins back to the Paul Porter Arena for first time since 2019

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.  – The Gardner-Webb's women's basketball team come back to the Paul Porter Arena after three road trips in a row with another non-conference matchup this time with Furman University on Wednesday night, November 29 at 7:00 p.m. tipping off on the Eddie Holbrook Court. Wednesday's game will air live on the Varsity Network App, GWUSports.com/listenlive, and ESPNCLT.com with Mark Binetti on the call for the Runnin' Bulldogs Sports Network. The game will also stream live on ESPN+ (watchespn.com) with Anna Witte bringing you the action.
 
'DAWG WATCH
Head coach Scott Merritt and the Runnin' Bulldogs entertain Furman for their seventh game of the season after an 0-6 opening to the 2023-24 campaign.
 
With six non-conference games completed, junior guard Ashley Hawkins leads the Runnin' Bulldogs in scoring averaging 12.5 points (6th in the Big South), 4.5 assists (2nd in the Big South), four rebounds per game, shooting 44 percent from the field (4th in the Big South), and averaging 32.3 minutes per contest. Hawkins has only been held to below double-digits in one game for Gardner-Webb this season. At the College of Charleston, she tied the single-game program record for assists with 11 on Nov. 20.
 
Senior guard Micahla Funderburk follows Hawkins in points for GWU averaging nine points, a perfect free throw percentage, 2.5 rebounds, and averaging 32 minutes per game. She also is ranked third in the conference for three-point field goal percentage with .325.
 
Graduate student forward Ramatoulaye Keita has ruled the paint for Gardner-Webb with a team-high six rebounds per game (t-7th in the Big South) with an average of 21.7 minutes per game.
 
PALADINS TRAVEL UPSTATE TO THE SPRINGS
The Furman Paladins enter Wednesday's game at 4-3, highlighting their season with wins over Big South opponents UNC Asheville 71-61 and Charleston Southern University 71-68. The Paladins lost two tight contests against Sun Belt teams, Coastal Carolina (78-72) and Appalachian State (68-63). Last season Furman posted a record of 11-19 falling in the opening round of the SoCon Championship to the University of Chattanooga 63-52. Furman leads the all-time series against the Runnin' Bulldogs 5-2. The last matchup came on Nov. 15, 2022, when Gardner-Webb beat Furman 90-57 in the Timmons Arena in Greenville, South Carolina.
 
RUNNIN' BULLDOGS VISIT THE SUNSHINE STATE
After this Wednesday's home contest against the Paladins, Gardner-Webb will take a week off before traveling to the state of Florida to face (R/V) FGCU (Dec. 7) and South Florida (Dec. 10).
