Gardner-Webb Takes Home Fripp Island Preview Championship

It is Gardner-Webb's first team championship since 2019
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - For the first time since 2019, the Gardner-Webb men's golf team took home a team championship trophy, winning the Fripp Island Preview championship on Monday, Nov. 6.
Gardner-Webb tied with Winthrop for the championship, shooting a three-over, 571 two-round score. The Runnin' Bulldogs shot a 281 in the first round, and a 290 in the second round. GWU tallied the most birdies of any team, finishing with 42. Max White led Gardner-Webb with 10 birdies, while Mark Chandler carded nine. Whittington also recorded an eagle.
The event championship is the first for the Gardner-Webb men's golf team since winning the team championship at the 2019 Elon Phoenix Championship. The Runnin' Bulldogs beat out Presbyterian College by seven strokes.
Individually, White finished tied for second overall, shooting a four-under 138 two-round score. The Tampa, Fla. native shot an even-par 71 in the first round before rising up six spots in the final round with a four-under, 67. White had the best score on par threes and par fours of anyone in the field, shooting an average one-under, 2.90 score on par threes, and an average three-under, 3.83 score on par fours.
Jack Boyer finished tied for seventh, shooting a one-over, 143 two-round score. Boyer shot a one-under 70 in the first round, and a two-over 73 in the second round. Boyer, along with his teammate Carter Rains, both shot a three-under, 4.63 average score on par fives.
Rains finished right behind Boyer at ninth, shooting a three-over, 145 two-round score. Rains shot an even-par 71 in the first round, and a three-over 74 in the second. Rains also tallied eight birdies.
Jules Bondil and Bradley Davis, Jr. finished tied for tenth, both shooting a four-over, 146 two-round score. Davis, Jr. shot an even-par 71 in the first round, and a four-over 75 in the second round. Bondil shot a one-under 70 in the first round, and a four-over 75 in the second round. Bondil led the Runnin' Bulldogs with 25 pars.
Chandler finished tied for 19th with an eight-over, 150 two-round score. Chandler shot a one-under 70 in the first round, and a nine-over 80 in the second round.
Maddox Whittington finished 29th with a 15-over, 157 two-round score. Whittington shot a six-over 77 in the opening round, and a nine-over 80 in the final round.
Alec Prentice of USC Upstate won the individual championship with a six-under 136 two-round score.
The Gardner-Webb men's golf team will now prepare for the 2024 spring season. GWU opens the spring campaign on Feb. 19, 2024 at the Wexford Intercollegiate in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
