BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University men's basketball team will continue their non-conference slate on Wednesday, Dec. 6 against the Terriers of Wofford College at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday's game will stream live on
ESPN+ (WatchESPN.com), with the radio call broadcast live on 730 The Game (ESPN Charlotte 730 AM), the Varsity Network App,
GWUSports.com/listenlive, and ESPNCLT.com. "The Voice of the Runnin' Bulldogs" Phil Constantino and former Penn State Head Coach Jerry Dunn will be on the ESPN+ broadcast. Mark Binetti and Jim "Mojo" Morrison will be the call for radio.
SCOUTING THE TERRIERS
The Wofford Terriers enter Wednesday's match up with a record of 3-5. Wofford's wins have come against Brevard College (Nov. 6), High Point University (Nov. 11), and Middle Tennessee State University (Dec. 2). Their losses have come against the University of Tennessee (Nov. 14), the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VT, Nov. 19), Canisius College (Nov. 24), the University of North Carolina at Asheville (Nov. 25), and Lipscomb University (Nov. 26). Last season the Terriers posted a record of 17-16 and reached the second round of the Southern Conference Championship tournament where they lost to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Head Coach Dwight Perry is in his first season at the helm of the Wofford men's basketball program, and is in his fifth season overall with the program. Gardner-Webb has a 4-7 record all-time against Wofford. This will be the third season in a row that the Runnin' Bulldogs have met the Terriers during the regular season. Wofford won last season's contest 60-58.
LAST TIME OUT
Most recently, Gardner-Webb earned a home victory over previously unbeaten Western Carolina (Dec. 2). The Runnin' Bulldogs and Catamounts went shot for shot early in the ballgame. WCU built a slight lead on a 14-9 run.
DQ Nicholas,
Ademide Badmus and
Caleb Robinson began to heat up as the 'Dawgs took advantage of some strong defensive stops and rebounding. Gardner-Webb pulled to within 10 points at the 5:43 minute mark. Due to some solid free throw shooting late in the first, Western Carolina led just 37-30 at the break.
The 'Dawgs kept pace even as WCU extended the lead back to eight by the 14:37 minute mark.
Caleb Robinson heated up again in the second half to battle back for Gardner-Webb.
DQ Nicholas hit a three-pointer with 8:39 to tie the game. The Runnin' Bulldogs then built a lead of their own with
Quest Aldridge hitting a clutch corner three to extend it to eight points before Robinson made it a 10-point lead. The Catamounts cut into the lead in the final minute of the contest. In the final 13 seconds
DQ Nicholas converted a three-point play before Isaiah Richard iced the game with a pair of free-throws. Gardner-Webb won 82-77.
'DAWG WATCH
Nine games into the season, Gardner-Webb is averaging 74.0 points-per-game, 39.9 rebounds per game and 12.4 assists.
Caleb Robinson leads the Runnin' Bulldogs in scoring with 131 and in rebounding with 57. He is the reigning Big South Player of the Week (Dec. 4). He is averaging 14.6 points-per-game, and tallied a GWU career high in the win over WCU with 29.
Julien Soumaoro is second in scoring with 114 averaging 12.7.
DQ Nicholas is third in scoring with 85, with
Brendan Mykalcio in fourth with 55.
Lucas Stieber is fifth with 54 points.
Ademide Badmus is second on the team in rebounds with 40 averaging 4.4 per game.
Isaiah Richards is third in rebounding with 38 and leads the team in field goal percentage at .826.
Cheickna Sissoko leads the 'Dawgs in blocks with seven.
LOOKING AHEAD
Gardner-Webb will this continue this home stand against North Greenville University on Monday, Dec. 11 at 7:00 p.m. The Runnin' Bulldogs will then travel to Greensboro, N.C. for a neutral sight game against Appalachian State (Dec. 16).
