BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Women's Lacrosse opens their 2023 season on Sunday at noon as they host the University of Cincinnati under the direction of Interim Head Coach
Maddie Martin. These two teams faced off with each other last year at Spangler Stadium with the Bearcats coming away with a 15-9 win.
The Runnin' Bulldogs enter the season coming off their best in school history. They finished with a school record ten wins and picked up their first win in the Big South Tournament as they knocked off #4 Campbell in the First Round. GWU defeated Winthrop, Campbell, and Longwood each for the first time in 2022 as well.
When Cincinnati came down to Boiling Springs last season, they outscored GWU 6-0 in the second quarter.
Danielle Burke had seven saves with
Eilish Gately,
Ciarra Ashworth, and
Bria Foley all tallying a pair of goals during the afternoon.
The Bearcats opened their season yesterday afternoon hosting Kent State and won 14-7 after opening the first quarter with the score at 7-0. Lauren Ottensmeyer led the team with four goals while having Camryn Callaghan and Elizabeth Murphy each finished with a hat trick.
This season, GWU returns eight starters and a dozen players that played in at least 11 games. The 'Dogs will be led by
Jada Preston,
Danielle Burke, and
Heather Lobas each being named Preseason All Big South players as well as earning All-Conference honors in 2022.
Preston will look to have the focus on the offensive end of the field as she led the team with 55 goals and 82 points, each ranking within the top five in the league.
Heather Lobas finished last season with 31 caused turnovers and 40 groundballs, both among the league leaders as well. Burke's 177 saves was the top mark in the Big South and had the second-highest total in school history.
First draw for tomorrow's game is at noon. The next pair of games, GWU will hit the road against ACC foes, Duke (2/19) and Clemson (2/23) to close out February's action.
