BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Winthrop snapped Gardner-Webb's seven game win streak on Wednesday night as they knocked off the Runnin' Bulldogs by a final score of 86-78. The eight point margin notched just the third time this season that GWU has lost by more than six points.
Winthrop got out to an early advantage and took a 52-32 lead into the halftime break. The Eagles went 19-26 (73.1%) and 9-13 (69.2%) from deep in the opening frame and hit on all five free throws for their high scoring total. The visitors grew their lead to as many as 27 however GWU slowly cut into it before half.
Gardner-Webb was able to slowly work the lead down in the second half but were unable to stop the Eagles' hot shooting. The 'Dogs got it as close as five within the final minute, but late free throws from Winthrop drew their lead back out. GWU outscored the Winthrop 46-34 in the period.
DQ Nicholas led the team in scoring as he finished with 21 to lead the four double digit scorers.
Kareem Reid finished with 14 with
Julien Soumaoro and
Caleb Robinson had 11 and 10 as well. Robinson also pulled down ten rebounds to finish with a double-double.
Anthony Selden also had a big night on the glass as he had 10 boards to go along with 8 points.
Lucas Stieber dished five assists in the effort as well to lead the team. Reid had a big night on the defensive end as he swatted away two shots and had three steals.
Winthrop's Cory Hightower and Kelton Talford each posted 22 points during the evening. Talford went a perfect 9-9 from the floor. The team finished 30-46 (65.2%) on shooting and 12-20 (60%) from behind the arc.
Gardner-Webb now turns their attention towards a trip to UNC Asheville (12-2) on Saturday with a tipoff slated for 3:00 p.m. as they look to bounce back from their 67-72 overtime loss to the Bulldogs from January 14.
