BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb dropped its doubleheader against Rider on Saturday afternoon. In the first, they fell 2-0 and lost in the second of the day 7-3.
Rider had a two-run homer to left field by Brendan O'Donnell in the fourth propel them to their first win of the day. The game lasted seven innings with
Tyler Switalski picking up the loss as he threw 5.2 innings striking out four batters during his outing. Michael Portella came on in relief in the sixth and pitched out of a jam and struck out a pair of batters in his 1.1 innings of work.
Jacob Marcos,
Alec Burns,
Humberto Torres and
Nick Capozzi each had a hit on the day as well. Burns' hit was a double as well.
The Broncos got up early in the second matchup of the day as they scored their first in the second inning before tallying four in the third for a 5-0 lead.
Mark Black had an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth with Pete Capobianco getting walked home for GWU to knock into the Rider lead. Capobianco had a solo homer in the seventh as well.
Marcos, Black, and Capobianco all picked up hits in the effort.
Luke Goodyear picked up the loss for the day as he went for two innings.
The Runnin' Bulldogs close out the four-game series on Sunday against Rider with first pitch slated for noon.
