FARMVILLE, VA – The Runnin' Bulldogs continued their historic season as they completed the season sweep of Longwood on Wednesday night by a final score of 89-72. With the win, Gardner-Webb is now 17-0 in Big South play, 25-4 overall this season, and winners of their past 17 games.
Gardner-Webb claimed the first pair of baskets during the night, but Longwood held an early 10-9 advantage to start the evening. The Runnin' Bulldogs responded to the Lancers' lead with a 12-0 scoring spurt over a two-minute stretch to gain control for the rest of the game.
The Runnin' Bulldogs got their lead back to double digits at the start of the second quarter and never let Longwood back within single digits the rest of the night. Heading into halftime, GWU led 47-33.
After trading a pair of baskets at the start of the half, the 'Dogs went on a 16-0 run to put their edge at 65-35. Longwood outscored the visitors in the final quarter, but it proved to be too little too late for them.
Jhessyka Williams led the team in scoring with 21 while
Alasia Smith added 20 herself. Both players also had a pair of blocks and a steal with Smith pulling down eight boards and Williams adding seven rebounds to go along with five assists.
Lauren Bevis had 16 points as she hit on four triples during the night.
Layken Cox also had double digits in scoring with 10.
Ki'Ari Cain finished the night with nine points, six rebounds, and three assists.
As a team, Gardner-Webb went 36-64 (56.3%) from the floor and hit on 11 of 19 (57.9%) shots from deep. GWU held a narrow 35-32 edge on the glass and 13-15 in turnovers. In points off turnovers, the 'Dogs scored 27 while Longwood had 10.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will finish the regular season on Saturday hosting USC Upstate for Senior Day with a tipoff scheduled for 2:00 p.m. With a win, GWU would move to 18-0 in conference play and close out a perfect season within Big South play, the first in the league since the '03-'04 season.
Already the top-seed in the upcoming Hercules Tires Big South Conference Championship – Gardner-Webb has its first Big South regular season title in hand since the 2009-2010 season.
