BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb picked up a massive 6-1 win over Elon on Thursday afternoon as they won their eighth in a row. The final score for the match ended at 6-1.
"I liked our energy in doubles and throughout the match," said Head Coach
Mike Griffith. "Elon is very well coaches and I felt the clincher was us winning the first sets on courts 1, 2, and 3, each by a 7-6 score."
The Runnin' Bulldogs got an early advantage by winning the doubles point with wins on courts 2 and 3.
Victor Putter and
Numa Lemieux-Monette got the first decision with a 6-2 score from position #2. The point was clinched on #3 by
Cathal Butler and
Sebastian Harris as they won 6-4.
Gardner-Webb went on to win five of the six singles matches. The first to be decided was
Kim Niethammer's at #6 as he won in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Elon got their lone victory with a 6-4, 6-1 at #5 by Oskar Antinheimo.
Putter won the next to conclude and give GWU their third team point of the day with a decision at #3 by a 7-6 (4), 6-2 score. The day was clinched by Lemieux-Monette in position #4 in three sets with it ending at 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The Runnin' Bulldogs
Eduardo Dias and
Alex Lepine both won first set tiebreakers, dropped their second sets, and had big wins during the third set to get individual victories for the victories from positions #1 and #2.
Gardner-Webb has a pair of home matches left this weekend as they host Limestone on Friday and Georgia Southern on Sunday to close out the month of February.
