Timely Hitting, Pitching Power Gardner-Webb To 6-2 Win Over Northwestern

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb took advantage of its scoring opportunities Friday and got a strong effort from its pitching staff to take a 6-2 win over Northwestern at John Henry Moss Stadium and Bill Masters Field.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (2-5) had nine hits and picked up its second Friday win in as many weeks behind ace Bobby Alcock (2-0).

Gardner-Webb took its first lead of the game in the third when speedy Nate Anderson scored from second on an infield single and error. Northwestern (0-4) tied the game in the top of the fourth, but the Runnin' Bulldogs took the lead for good in the bottom half when Jacob McCaskey belted a leadoff home run to left center.

Curtis Robison plated a run in the fifth on an RBI fielder's choice and, after the Wildcats scored a run in the top of the seventh to pull within 3-2 – Gardner-Webb rallied for a pair runs after the stretch to effectively put the game away.

Nate Anderson hammered a pitch to deep right for a leadoff double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jacob Marcos and scored on an RBI single from Alec Burns. McCaskey followed with another hit, driving a sharp single not right field to drive home Robison for a 5-2 lead.

Gardner-Webb added to its lead in the eighth. Humberto Torres singled up the middle to lead off the inning and – after a sacrifice bunt from Max Smyley, Anderson ripped a ground rule double to left center for a 6-2 lead.

Alcock was tough to hit once again, fanning seven batters and allowing only two hits (one run) in 6.0 innings of work. Connor Maggi came on to hurl 1.1 innings of perfect relief, striking out his final batter in the eighth.

Dalton Wood came on to close out the game

Gardner-Webb was led at the plate by McCaskey, who went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Anderson (2-for-2) had two doubles and scored twice and Torres went 2-for-3 with a double.

Robison (1-for-4, RBI) and Burns (1-for-5, RBI) also had hits for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Michael Farinelli (0-2) was tagged with the loss, going 4.0 innings with three runs (two earned) allowed. He fanned four and walked three.

The Wildcats had three different batters with hits in the game, with Tony Livermore (1-for-3, RBI) also drawing a walk from his leadoff spot.

The Runnin' Bulldogs play another Big Ten foe on Saturday, hosting Michigan State at 2:00 pm. Tickets are available online at GWUSports.com for $5 (general admission).
