ORLANDO – GWU carried the momentum over from yesterday's comeback victory and took down Columbia 10-1 Saturday morning.
The Runnin' Bulldogs had perhaps their most complete game, dominating from start to finish on both sides of the ball.
Andrea Lyon got things going out of the gate. After
Adrienne Visintine and
Kasey Fava walked, Lyon hit a shot over the left center wall to put the 'dogs up 3-0.
In the second,
Bridgette Strobl led with a double to centerfield. Visintine singled, scoring Strobl and making it 4-0.
Gardner-Webb added another in the third.
Emily Garcia singled and Lyon walked putting runners on first and second.
Ella Christopher then singled, scoring Garcia and increasing the lead to five.
Columbia went on to score one run in the fourth to make it 5-1.
In the top of the fifth Lyon walked again and
Alexa Key came in to pinch run.
Taylor Perry singled, moving the runner over, before Strobl scored her on a triple to right center.
Neither team scored in the sixth and the Runnin' Bulldogs piled on four more runs in the seventh.
Lyon walked to start the inning and Perry reached on a fielder's choice.
Abbey Goodrum pinch ran for Perry and went to second on a wild pitch. Christopher hit an infield ground ball and reached first on a fielder's choice. Strobl came to the plate with two outs and runner on and sent a shot over the wall to left center scoring two more.
Following the homerun,
Annicka McLaughlin and Kaleigh Nicholson singled, accompanied by a Visintine walk to load the bags. Freshman
Taylor Dreher got in on the action, pinch hitting for Fava. Dreher singled to left field and two runners scored after an error.
Every player in the lineup registered a hit for the Runnin' Bulldogs with Lyon and Strobl combining for seven of the nine RBIs. Dreher and Visintine were responsible for the other two.
Catcher
Bridgette Strobl was a single shy of hitting for the cycle after a 3-3 day at the plate.
On defense, Lyon had one of her best games in the circle. The senior pitched all seven innings, allowing just one earned run, and retiring nine batters.
"Today is a glimpse of what this team can be the rest of the year," said head coach
Bailey Wigness. "Great pitching, solid defense, and timely two-out hitting. The energy in the dugout was electric. It is no secret we have struggled the first couple of weeks but this team refuses to quit. I am proud of their heart and resiliency and I am looking forward to seeing us continue to get better."
Gardner-Webb will take the diamond next against undefeated Clemson. The Runnin' Bulldogs are set to take on the No. 5 Tigers in a doubleheader Wednesday, March 1, at 4:00 P.M.
