BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb hit three home runs and used a six-run fifth inning to power past Western Carolina 14-4 Wednesday night.
It was the fourth win in a row for the Runnin' Bulldogs (5-4).
Gardner-Webb had 11 hits and left only four men on base all game in another impressive performance.
The Runnin' Bulldogs struck with two outs in the first, getting a two-run blast from
Jacob McCaskey to go up 2-0. Pete Capobianco followed suit in the bottom of the second, hammering a fastball off the scoreboard in right center for a 3-0 lead.
Western Carolina (2-7) plated two runs in the top of the third to pull within a run and tied the score with a run n the top of the fifth. The Catamounts had the bases loaded with one away, but lefty
Luke Goodyear came on to retire the next two batters and end the threat.
Gardner-Webb got back on track in the bottom half of the fifth, getting a leadoff single from Capobianco to start a rally.
Trevor Mattson was hit by a pitch and
Jacob Marcos bunted his way on to load the bases.
Curtis Robison hit the first pitch he saw sharply through the right side to push Gardner-Webb to a 5-3 lead and
Alec Burns ripped a single up the middle that gave GWU a 6-3 edge.
McCaskey lined out to center for a sacrifice fly and a 7-3 lead – then
Mark Black hit the first pitch he saw over the fence in left for a 9-3 advantage.
Western Carolina cut the lead to 9-4 in the seventh, but Gardner-Webb extended after the stretch – plating four runs on a pair of hits. McCaskey made the score 10-4 with a hard single to left and
Humberto Torres hit a two-run double with the bases loaded for a 12-4 lead.
Nate Anderson followed with a sacrifice fly to right to get to 13 runs.
McCaskey (3-for-4, HR, 4 RBI), Capobianco (2-for-4, HR, RBI) and Marcos (2-for-5, 2B, 2 runs) led Gardner-Webb's offense. Four other batters collected one hit each in the win.
Luke Goodyear (1-1) came out of the pen for the win, tossing 2.1 innings and allowing only one run on two hits. GWU used five pitchers, with
Reid Bertram allowing only one earned run in 4.0 innings for a no decision start.
Western Carolina had eight hits, led by Pascanel Ferreras (2-for-4, 2 RBI). The Catamounts used seven different arms in the game. Reliever Brandon Eldridge (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs in 2.0 innings of work.
Gardner-Webb will hit the road for the first time this season, beginning a three-game series at Appalachian State on Friday in Boone, N.C.
