BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb walked it off in the 12
th inning as they defeated UMass 4-3. The Runnin' Bulldogs overcame a 3-2 deficit in the bottom of the inning as they tallied a pair of runs to get the win.
The Minutemen got on the board first with an unearned run when Zack Zaetta stole third, but advanced home off a throw that got past the third baseman. GWU's
Reid Bertram then walked the next two batters, but pitched out of it by recording outs on the next two batters.
Gardner-Webb nearly responded in the bottom of the frame as
Jacob Marcos was hit by a pitch and
Curtis Robison's single advanced him to third.
Alec Burns came to the plate and hit a fly ball to right field that gave Marcos a chance of tagging up and scoring, but the throw by Will MacLean to Michael Toth got Marcos at the plate.
After getting out of the first inning jam, Bertram went on to get 10 of the next 11 batters he faced out, issuing one walk. Bertram exited the game after allowing a walk with two outs in the top of the fifth. He ended the day allowing one hit, four walks and striking out three in his 4.2 innings of work. Michael Portella came on the mound to finish the inning.
The Runnin' Bulldogs offense put runners on in every inning and scored their first of the afternoon in the fifth with
Curtis Robison doubling down the line to bring home
Jacob Marcos all the way from first base. Then in the sixth, the Minutemen hit a batter and allowed three walks to put GWU ahead 2-1.
Trevor Mattson was the one who was walked and brought
Nate Anderson home.
UMass answered right back as they scored the tying run in the seventh. They nearly put up a go-ahead run in the eighth but a Marcos – McCaskey – Torres relay throw got the runner out at the plate for the second out of the inning.
The Minutemen threatened again in the ninth putting runners on first and third with two outs. Jake Given went to the plate and hit a grounder to McCaskey's left and made an incredible stop and throw to second to end the inning and keep the score tied. GWU threatened to end the game in the bottom of the ninth as they loaded the bases with an out, but were unable to bring anyone home, sending the game into extras.
Neither team was able to get much in the tenth or the eleventh innings, but the twelfth had each team score.
UMass was able to break the tie and score a run in the top of the inning as Zaetta hit a one-out double to right to bring home a runner. The Minutemen then loaded the bases as they got a walk and infield single with still one out on the board.
Jacob McCaskey then forced a double play and get out of the inning with
AJ Solomon kickstarting it.
In the bottom of the inning, GWU flew out for the first out, but Pete Capobianco hit a triple to right field and Solomon had a sacrifice fly to bring him home and tie the game at 3. With two outs,
Ryan Kennell had his first career hit to put him on first after he drove the ball to left field. Marcos stepped to the plate and hit a high-flying ball that the right fielder lost and ended up bringing Kennell home to walk it off for the 'Dogs.
Capobianco and Robinson led the team with a pair of hits each. Marcos, Anderson and Kennell each had one. GWU used eight pitchers in the outing and McCaskey picked up the win as he came on in the 12
th.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action this weekend as they start Big South play hosting Longwood. First pitch for the series will be on Friday at 5:00 p.m. against the Lancers.
