BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. –
Alec Burns two-run blast in the bottom of the ninth gave Gardner-Webb a 4-3 win over Longwood Sunday to complete the series sweep.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (14-6, 3-0 Big South) clinched the series on Saturday with a pair of wins over the Lancers (7-15, 0-3 Big South) and remained in the lead pack atop the Big South standings with Sunday's win.
Gardner-Webb has now won eight games in a row and 12 of its last 14 games.
Curtis Robison led off the ninth with a five pitch walk and after a first pitch ball and a mound visit, Burns hit a fastball deep over the fence win left to set of a celebration on Bill Masters Field.
The game lasted less than two hours, as both pitching staff's worked quickly.
The Lancers took advantage of a dropped fly ball in the top of the fourth to take an early lead, but Gardner-Webb responded with two runs in the bottom half to go in front.
Jacob Marcos led off the bottom of the fourth with a single through the left side – Gardner-Webb's first knock of the day – and Robison followed with a double to left center to put both in scoring position.
A pair of ground ball outs threatened to snuff out the rally, but
Mark Black laced a two-run single into left for a 2-1 lead.
The Lancers surged in front again in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of two errors to go up 3-2, and neither team could get going again until Burns delivered the game winner.
Casey Young took a no decision, not allowing an earned run in 6.0 innings of work. He scattered six hits and did not issue a walk.
Lenny Washington came on to work a scoreless seventh to keep Gardner-Webb within striking distance.
Phil Fox (2-0) was terrific out of the bullpen to earn a win, pitching 2.0 scoreless innings and allowing just one hit with three strikeouts.
Burns (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI), Marcos (1-for-4), Robison (1-for-3, 2B), Black (1-for-3, 2 RBI) and
Nick Capozzi (1-for-1) accounted for Gardner-Webb's offense.
Elliot Dix led Longwood's eight-hit attack, going 5-for-5 with a double to raise his batting average to .407 on the season. Gregory Ryan (2-for-4) also had a pair of hits for the Lancers.
Longwood got a sharp pitching effort from starter Andrew Potojecki, who worked 7.0 innings and allowed just two runs on three hits. He struck out seven and needed only 73 pitches to do his job.
Andrew Melnyk (1-1) was tagged with the loss out of the pen.
Gardner-Webb continues Big South play next weekend, traveling to Winthrop for a three-game series that begins on Friday in Rock Hill, S.C.
