Runnin' Bulldogs Roll To 14-4 Win Over Radford Friday Night To Open Series

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 14-4 win over Radford Friday night in a Big South Conference series opener.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (16-9, 5-2 Big South) got a three-run home run from Peter Capobianco in the bottom of the second to stake itself out to a comfortable lead and scored twice more in the bottom of the third.

Alec Burns and Jacob McCaskey each coaxed walks to lead off the second and, after a pair of strikeouts put the rally in jeopardy, Capobianco hammered a fastball deep to left for the early lead.

Gardner-Webb got going again in the third, getting a one-out triple from Curtis Robison – and a run-scoring error for a 4-0 lead one batter later. Burns scored Mark Black on a sacrifice fly for a 5-0 margin and the 'Dogs were in control.

Radford (7-19, 0-4 Big South) went to its bullpen to begin the fifth and Gardner-Webb got to work again with two outs. Robison earned a walk, then Black drew a free pass on four pitches.

Burns followed with a two-run double for a 7-0 lead.

The Highlanders finally got on the board in the sixth inning after a hit batter and walk led to an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to trim the Gardner-Webb lead to 7-2.

Jacob Marcos came through with a big hit in the bottom of the sixth to get those two runs back, driving home Ryan Kennell and Capobianco with a two-out single to right center. Both men walked earlier in the inning.

Gardner-Webb scored on an error in the seventh to get into double figures and plated four runs on two errors and a passed ball in the eighth for the final margin.

The Runnin' Bulldogs had four hits in the game, led by Capobianco (1-for-2, HR, 3 RBI), Burns (1-for-1, 3 runs), Marcos (1-for-4, 2 RBI) and Robison (1-for-3, 3B, 3 runs).

The 'Dogs took advantage of 13 free passes in the game – 10 walks and three hit batters.

Bobby Alcock (4-0) picked up another win, tossing 7.0 strong innings with only one earned run allowed and eight strikeouts. He scattered four singles in the victory.

Radford had six hits on Friday from six different batters.

Starting arm Carter Seabrooke (0-2) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on two hits in 4.0 innings of work. He struck out five and walked two.

Gardner-Webb and Radford will meet again on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm (ESPN+).
