CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern defeated Gardner-Webb 5-2 on Saturday afternoon in each team's conference opener to the 2023 season. This marked just the second match within the Big South in league play so far this year.
The Buccaneers got off to a strong start as they won all three doubles matches to get off to a hot start. The home team clinched the doubles point with the decision on court #2.
In singles, the Bucs bumped their lead to 3-0 with a pair of early straight set decisions. The first to conclude was on court #6 followed by #3. GWU got their first point of the day from
Elise Semmartin over Khyanna Singh 6-3, 7-5 from position #5.
Charleston Southern sealed the win with the decision in the topflight by Luiza Fallana in three sets. They also got the victory on court #2 in three sets. Gardner-Webb stole away the final point of the afternoon with the decision on court #4 from Valeria LLoclla with a final score of 7-5, 2-6, 10-7.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to their home courts for a pair of matches against Big South opponents. It starts with a game against Presbyterian on Tuesday and includes a matchup with Campbell on Friday.
