Box Score BOONE, N.C. - Gardner-Webb pounded out 16 hits and rode several big innings to beat Appalachian State 19-6 Sunday afternoon in the series finale.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (6-5) scored three runs in the first, three runs in the second and two runs each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a commanding 12-0 lead.
After Appalachian State (8-2) scored five runs in the seventh to trim the lead to 13-6, Gardner-Webb put the game on ice with six runs in the top of the ninth for the final margin.
Humberto Torres' three-run home run in the first was the early blow for Gardner-Webb, driving home
Jacob McCaskey and
Alec Burns.
Burns took advantage of control problems for the Mountaineers' pitching staff in the second, drawing a bases-loaded walk for a 4-0 lead - and McCaskey followed with a two-run single for a 6-0 advantage.
Curtis Robison's RBI double in the fourth extended the lead and Burns reached on an error to score a run to make the score 8-0.
Trevor Mattson's two-run single in the fifth put the Runnin' Bulldogs up by a touchdown and a field goal - and Torres' belted his second home run of the day in the sixth. That two-run shot to left made the score 12-0.
After Appalachian State broke up the shutout in the bottom half of the sixth, Pete Capobianco drilled a solo shot over the fence in center for a 13-1 margin.
The Mountaineers threatened in the seventh, plating five runs before the GWU bullpen could get out of the jam - and the 'Dogs poured it on in the ninth to put the game away.
Mattson had a two-run single, Robison legged out an infield single to drive in a run and Burns roped a two-run single into left center. McCaskey plated the game's final run with a ground ball to short.
Lefty
Tyler Switalski picked up the win, improving to 2-1 on the season. The sophomore went 6.0 complete, struck out eight and allowed only one run on five hits.
Connor Maggi came on late out of the pen to work 1.2 scoreless frames and
Lenny Washington had a scoreless ninth.
Mattson had a career day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored, two doubles and four RBI.
Mark Black went 3-for-6 at the dish and Torres continued his torrid tear through the season's early weeks by going 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs, three runs scored and five RBI. Marcos (2-for-5) and Robison (2-for-5) also had a pair of hits for Gardner-Webb.
Appalachian State had seven hits on Sunday and used six pitchers.
Gardner-Webb returns home on Tuesday afternoon, hosting North Carolina A&T at 4:00 pm.
