Gardner-Webb Pitching Staff Shines Tuesday In 3-1 Win Over UNC Greensboro

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb used timely hits and a standout pitching performance from its staff to beat UNC Greensboro 3-1 Tuesday.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (21-10) used eight different pitchers and limited the Spartans (16-17) to just two hits in the win.

Gardner-Webb plated a pair of runs in the fourth inning to take the lead for good.

Mark Black led off the frame with a walk on six pitches, then Alec Burns followed with a five-pitch base on balls. Nate Anderson had the big hit, driving home Black with an RBI double into the right center gap.

UNC Greensboro slowed the rally with a strikeout, but Peter Capobianco drove home Burns with a sacrifice fly to center for the 2-0 lead.

Capobianco walked to lead off the seventh inning to get Gardner-Webb back in gear. A sacrifice bunt moved him into scoring position and Capobianco scored two batters later on a throwing error that sailed into centerfield for a 3-0 lead.

Gardner-Webb's bullpen retired nine batters in a row to keep the shutout intact, but the Spartans' Daniel Cerda spoiled the scoreless bid with a solo home run to lead off the ninth.

Reliever Phil Fox recovered with a ground ball and two strikeouts to earn his first save of the season.

Tanner Chafin (1-0) picked up the win, tossing a scoreless fifth inning with the 'Dogs in front. Four different relievers faced just three batters in their inning of work.

Luke Goodyear got the start and cruised through 2.0 innings without allowing a hit.

Six different GWU batters accounted for one hit each to lead the offense. Anderson and Burns each had doubles.

UNC Greensboro starter Grant Aycock (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in 3.0 innings of work. The Spartans used three bullpen arms.

Credo (2-for-3, HR, RBI) had both of UNC Greensboro's base hits on Tuesday.

Gardner-Webb is back in action on Friday at High Point to begin 12-game road swing. The Runnin' Bulldogs won't play at home again until May 5.
