ELON, N.C. – Gardner-Webb won its second road game in as many nights, reaching double figures in a 12-2 victory over Elon on Wednesday in eight innings.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (24-12) scored two runs in the third, one in the fourth and four runs each in the fifth and the sixth to pull away. GWU added an insurance run in the top of the eighth – and both coaching staffs agreed to cut the game short after eight innings with both facing key conference series this weekend.
Once Gardner-Webb took the lead with a pair of runs in the third it held the lead the rest of the way.
Jacob Marcos and
Curtis Robison led off the third with back-to-back singles and
Nate Anderson followed with a double into the opposite field gap for a 1-0 lead.
Alec Burns walked and
Jacob McCaskey staked GWU to a 2-0 lead with a sacrifice fly.
Elon got a run back in the bottom half of the inning, but the Runnin' Bulldogs extended its lead with an RBI double from Robison in the fourth.
Trevor Mattson walked to lead off that inning and scored on the hit.
Gardner-Webb broke the game open in the middle innings. Anderson led off with a double in the fifth and, after an error allowed Burns to reach, Anderson scored on a passed ball. McCaskey singled to drive home Burns and
Bo Rusher III belted a two-run home run to right for a 7-1 lead.
Burns started a rally in the sixth with a single, and
Ryan Kennell followed suit with a hit into right center. McCaskey doubled home Burns and Rusher reached on an error by the Elon pitcher to get Kennell home.
Nick Capozzi singled through the left side to drive home Rusher and
Jacob Marcos capped the rally with an RBI single into right center for an 11-2 lead.
Rusher walked to lead off the eighth and scored on a Capozzi single for the final margin.
All nine Gardner-Webb batters collected at least one of the team's 16 hits, with Anderson (3-for-5) leading the charge. Marcos (2-for-4), Robison (2-for-6), Burns (2-for-4), McCaske (2-for-3) and Capozzi (2-for-4) each had two hits.
Luke Goodyear (2-2) got the start and a win in 3.0 scheduled innings of work. He allowed just one unearned run and one hit.
Grant Vera, Tanner Chapin,
Brendan Bean and
Dalton Wood each worked scoreless frames for the 'Dogs.
Elon finished with six hits, and six different batters accounted for that damage.
Ben Sieracki took the loss, working 2.0 innings and allowing two runs on three hits.
Gardner-Webb begins a very important three-game series on the road Friday, traveling to face Presbyterian at 6:00 pm (ESPN+).
