FARMVILLE, VA. – Longwood defeated Gardner-Webb 12-11 in overtime for their first Big South win of the season. GWU overcame a three-goal halftime deficit and took the lead in the second half. A pair of freshmen helped lead the team with
Emma Duchscherer scoring five points and
Holly Martindale forcing key turnovers down the stretch.
The Runnin' Bulldogs took an early 2-0 lead and were up 4-2 in the closing moments of the first quarter before the Lancers tallied a pair in the final 31 seconds to tie it at 4-4. LU then outscored GWU 5-2 in the second to take a three-score lead into the break.
Gardner-Webb slowed down the Longwood attack in the second half allowing only one goal in each quarter. The 'Dogs cut their deficit to 8-9 before tallying three unanswered between the third and fourth quarters to put them ahead by a score.
Aimie Perino notched the score to tie it at 10 and then dished the pass to Duchscherer who put GWU ahead 11-10 with 2:58 to play.
Longwood's Lily Stohlman evened it back at 11 with 1:24 to go. Each team had their goalies provide key saves and defense produce turnovers to have the game go to overtime. In the extra period, Longwood secured the draw and had Kendra Defilippo net the game-winner.
Duchscherer had four goals and an assist in the outing for a career-high in her debut season.
Alera Cornett finished with a hat trick and she had three goals to go along with an assist.
Bria Foley had a team-high three assists and scored one while Perino had two assists and a goal.
Rylee Gonzalez finished with two assists in the performance.
On the defensive end, H. Martindale had a career-high four caused turnovers and three groundballs, which led the team.
Victoria Fischetti and
Lauren Connor each had two CTs with Connor scooping three GBs as well.
Bria Foley led GWU with five draw controls and
Brittany Sherrod had three.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Wednesday, April 5 hosting Radford for a 4:00 p.m. matchup for Senior Day.
