HPU Overcomes Halftime Deficit to Defeat Gardner-Webb 15-9 in Season Finale

HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point pulled away from Gardner-Webb in the third quarter to claim a 15-9 victory to conclude the regular season. Multiple Runnin' Bulldogs reached career marks to round out the 2023 season.

The Runnin' Bulldogs got on the board first as Emma Duchscherer buried a shot in front of the crease off a pass from Jada Preston. It marked her 250th career point, becoming just the 7th player in league history to reach that mark.

Gardner-Webb held the Panthers scoreless for nearly the entire first quarter as they were unable to break through until 1:10 left in the period. Danielle Burke saved the first six shots that she faced to keep them off the board. GWU won the ensuing draw and after a scramble for the loose ball, Bria Foley found Preston on the opposite end with an empty goal to put the 'Dogs back ahead.

In the second, the teams traded 2-0 runs with HPU getting their first lead of the day off a free-position opportunity with 6:05 left. GWU then went back ahead at 4-3 with the second being a fastbreak goal for Duchscherer's second of the day with Brittany Sherrod getting the assist. HPU came back ahead, but GWU had the last flurry of them with Rylee Gonzalez' scoring in the closing seconds to put the score at 6-5 heading into the halftime break.

Preston opened the second half by netting her 4th goal of the day for her 150th of her career, marking just the 9th player in league history to reach that total. This brought the score to 7-5 with the two-goal margin being the largest separation between the two schools all day. The Panthers then responded by stringing together a large run to get the lead back and hold their largest lead of the game.

Lauren Connor stopped the HPU run after being found off a pass from Gonzalez on a free position opportunity. Aimie Perino then finished off a woman-up possession to get another back off another Gonzalez assist. HPU notched a pair to end the game and seal the 15-9 win.

Preston led GUW in goals with four while also dishing out an assist. Gonzalez had the team-high in assists with three while also notching a score. Duchscherer was the other multi-goal scorer. Perino and Connor each had a goal with Foley and Sherrod each recorded an assist.

Burke led the team with four groundballs with Sherrod and Mackenzie Gallery added two each. There were seven different players that recorded a caused turnover during the action as well with Burke, Preston, Sherrod, Gallery, Grace Briggs, Heather Lobas and Jayla Middlebrooks.

The Runnin' Bulldogs Danielle Burke recorded her 100th career groundball with the team during the action as well. During the action, she also stopped 16 shots to record a season-high in her final game of the season.
