CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb lefty
Tyler Switalski was named Big South Conference Starting Pitcher of the Week on Monday after another terrific outing.
Switalski (Waynesburg, Pa.) helped the Runnin' Bulldogs (18-9, 7-2 Big South) keep pace with the lead pack in league play with a weekend sweep of Radford.
The 6-foot-4 sophomore tossed 7.0 shutout innings on Saturday against the Highlanders, allowing just two singles and striking out 10 to anchor a 16-0 win. Switalski used an effective array of off-speed pitches and a fastball that bumped 94 mph on the radar gun to roll through the order.
Switalski didn't allow a runner past second base and didn't have an inning with more than one base runner. He faced 24 batters, used 98 pitches and coaxed four ground ball outs in addition to his strikeouts.
A very impressive season continued for Switalski, as he improved to 6-1 with a 3.00 ERA in seven starts. He has fanned 50 batters in 42.0 innings with only 13 walks.
Gardner-Webb hits the road on Tuesday for a non-conference test at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C. First pitch is set for 6:00 pm at historic War Memorial Stadium (FloBaseball.com).
