
Twelve Runnin’ Bulldogs Land On SoCon Academic Honor Roll

Three wrestlers earn SoCon Commissioner's Medals for a GPA of 3.8 or higher
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Twelve total Gardner-Webb wrestlers earned a spot on the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll announced on Wednesday, July 12.
Jha'Quan Anderson, Todd Carter, Aedyn Concepcion, Corbin Dion, Jeffrey Jacome, James Johnson, Tyler Lamon, RJ Mosley, Abraham Preston, Matt Rowland, Drew West, and Andrew Wilson all earned the honors for the Runnin' Bulldogs. To earn a spot on the SoCon Academic Honor Roll, athletes must be a member of a SoCon affiliated sport and earn at least a 3.0 GPA during the 2022-23 season.
The 2,471 selections are the third-most in SoCon history. Of this year's qualifiers, 704 earned the Commissioner's Medal, awarded to student-athletes who attain a GPA of 3.8 or higher throughout the year, and 223 posted perfect 4.0 GPAs. The honor roll includes all 20 sports sponsored by the SoCon in 2022-23 as well as the non-sponsored sports of swimming and diving, water polo, triathlon, men's and women's lacrosse and beach volleyball. Wrestling accounted for 98 selections.
The honor is the second this week for Anderson, Carter and Mosley, who earned SoCon Academic All-Conference Awards yesterday.
Anderson earned the nod after earning a 3.31 GPA while majoring in Exercise Science. Earned his second career at-large selection to the NCAA Championships, finishing with a 27-17 record at 184 pounds this season. The Redshirt Junior won his final 10 duals of the regular season to go 7-1 within league action and finished runner-up at the SoCon Championships for the second straight year.
Carter picks up his honor thanks to a 3.65 GPA in Business Administration. The Blackshear, Ga. native finished with a 13-3 record during the regular season and going 5-3 in SoCon action. Carter finished 4th at the SoCon Championships with a pair of postseason victories at 133 pounds. He also Finished in 4th at the ARMS Software Patriot Open with two wins.
Mosley closed his historic career with another award, earning the Academic All-Conference honor with a 3.33 GPA while obtaining his MBA. Mosley was selected to the NCAA Championships for the third time of his career this time as the #24 seed. The Oklahoma City native earned an automatic berth after winning the Southern Conference crown at 165 for the second straight year. Mosley finished the season with a 27-7 record on the season including 7-1 against league foes. He also Won the ARMS Software Patriot Open championship at 165 pounds with a perfect 4-0 record.
Concepcion, Rowland and Wilson all earned the SoCon Commissioner's Medal for finishing with a GPA of 3.8 or higher.
Concepcion finished the past year with a 3.93 GPA while majoring in Communication Studies. On the mat, the junior Competed in four tournaments over the season, finishing second in the Appalachian Open at 125 gong 2-1. The Anchorage, Alaska native collected eight victories on the season, including a pair of major decision victories.
The only GWU wrestler with a perfect 4.00 GPA, Rowland exceled on the mat and in the classroom while majoring in Political Science and International Affairs. The freshman competed at five tournaments in the winter, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Newberry Open after winning both of his opening bouts. Rowland earned one major decision, two tech falls and two falls over the season.
Wilson closes out the medalists for GWU after earning a 3.91 GPA while majoring in Biology. The sophomore became the team's starter at 174 with seven wins on the year. Wilson went 2-2 at the Clarion Open winning each of his bouts in the winner's bracket at the event. The Indianapolis, Ind. Native also picked up a 7-4 decision over ACC opponent Nick Tattini of Duke.
Dion finished the year with a 3.00 GPA in Christian Studies. The starter at 149 for majority of the season, Dion earned his first win of the season over Bloomsburg's William Morrow at 157 with an 11-6 decision. The junior also 3-2 at the 2022 ARMS Software Patriot Open, winning a pair of matches by major decision.
Jacome capped off a successful freshman campaign for the Runnin' Bulldogs, earning a 3.42 GPA while majoring in Exercise Science. The South Plainfield, N.J. native posted a 15-11 record on the year over six tournaments, including a fourth-place finish at the Newberry Open, with five victories. Two of those were by pinfall, and three came via major decision.
While Johnson did not see any action on the mat for the Runnin' Bulldogs this year, he got the job done in the classroom, finishing the year with a 3.27 GPA while majoring in Business Administration.
Another strong freshman for the 'Dawgs, Lamon finished his first season in Boiling Springs with a 3.17 GPA while majoring in Business Management. Lamon won four of his final six matches on the year, with both of his first career victories coming via pinfall.
The heavyweight starter for Gardner-Webb, Preston picked up the honor thanks to his 3.78 GPA while majoring in Biology. The sophomore's biggest win of the season came at the Mountaineer Open, a 3-1 decision over Appalachian State.
A grad transfer from Northern Illinois, West shined for the Runnin' Bulldogs, finishing the year with a 3.67 GPA while majoring in Sport Education. In his first season in Boiling Springs, he became the starter at 125 and went 24-12 overall on the season. The Solon, Iowa native was victorious in his first six duals of the season, picking up a third-place finish at the ARMS Software Patriot Open. West had strong performance in the SoCon Championships, going 3-1 to finish in third overall. He also showed his quickness, defeating ACC opponent Ethan Grimminger of Duke by fall within 40 seconds.
It is the third straight season that the Gardner-Webb wrestling team has placed at least 10 wrestlers on the SoCon Academic Honor Roll, the most being 17 following the 2019-20 season.
