CLEMSON, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb University women's soccer team was bested by Clemson University on Sunday evening by a final score of 9-0. Freshman goalkeeper
Jamie Martin sets a new Gardner-Webb women's soccer program record tallying 18 saves in the contest.
"We knew that Clemson is ranked 25 in the nation." Said head coach Tina Murphy. "We knew they were a great team going in. Having played them, they are just a fantastic team I think our players learned a lot from the game, and will continue to learn and make improvements to get better from here.
Clemson netted nine goals off of Mackenzie Duff, Makenna Morris, Samantha Meredith, Emma Wennar, Renee Lyles, and Jenna Tobia.
Martin's 18 saves breaks the GWU women's soccer single-game record that was set by Katelyn Kellog during the 2019 season when she posted 17 against Mercer.
"Jamie really battled for us," said coach Murphy. "She was under pressure and our backline was under pressure from the first minute of the game through the 90
th minute of the game. So, for her to come up with 18 saves in some really key moments is great. I know her coaches and her teammates are proud of her."
Gardner-Webb's next match is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 25 at 7:00 p.m. when they host Allen University.
