BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University women's soccer team tallied their first victory of the 2023 season on Friday night earning an 8-0 win over Allen. Head Coach Tina Murphy recorded her first win at the helm of the program.
"We scored some nice goals and it was nice to get a lot of different goal sorcerers, said coach Murphy. "That was great and it gives us confidence going forward."
The Runnin' Bulldogs scored four goals in each half of the contest. Sophomore midfielder
Lina Ullen opened the scoring for GWU in the 10
th minute off an assist from
Lea Gossett. Junior midfielder
Carina Leal scored second in the 25
th minute off assists from
Lily Stegall and
Lina Ullen.
Livi Tanzer scored in the 31
st minute off assists from
Carina Leal and
Mackenzie Farr, before Leal would net her second goal of the night less than a minute later.
Livi Tanzer earned the assist.
The second half saw
Lina Ullen also record her second score of the night in the 47
th minute off assists from
Kaitlyn Huff and
Izzi Lugo.
Julianna Jatkola would follow in the 66
th minute off a
Lea Gossett assist, and
Megan Gettys scored in the 72
nd minute unassisted.
Klara Ovefelt capped off the night for Gardner-Webb with a goal off a penalty in the 85
th minute to score the eighth and final goal.
"We are still working to build our fitness base and get into the overall rhythm of the team," said coach Murphy. "We will keep working to build those bases."
Carina Leal and
Lina Ullen each tallied multi-point performances earning two goals and an assist in the match.
Gardner-Webb's next match is scheduled for Sunday, at 2:00 p.m. when they host the Buccaneers of East Tennessee State.
