COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb University men's soccer team took down the University South Carolina on the road in Columbia, S.C. on Sunday by a final score of 2-0. It's the first win for the Runnin' Bulldogs over a power five opponent since Sept. 1, 2009 when GWU defeated Clemson.
"I was really impressed with us to be honest," said coach Wells. "We executed our game plan correctly and had some real quality and braveness about us today."
The 'Dawgs dominated from the start of the match with the first goal coming from sophomore forward
Santiago Hoyos in the 7
th minute.

Caio Hughes picked up assists. Hoyos scored his second of the day off a penalty in the 56
th minute of the contest. The backline held strong to insure the shutout.
"For me personally Hoyos is one of the best strikers I've had the pleasure of working with," said coach Wells. "He's a winner and he understand that at this level in order to be a pro every detail matters. He has a bright future ahead of him and I'm really pleased Gardner-Webb is now part of that journey."
Additionally, Sunday's win is the first win or draw against a power five school since GWU earned a draw against NC State on Oct. 1, 2013.
Gardner-Webb now sits at 2-0-0 on the season. Their next match is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 7:00 p.m. when they host James Madison University at Greene-Harbison Stadium.
