BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University men's soccer team was bested on Saturday evening by the Eagles of Winthrop University by a final score of 4-3. The 'Dawgs tallied three goals in the second half to close in on Winthrop before ultimately falling in the match.
"I just want to say congratulations to Winthrop.", said coach Wells. "They deserved it. They are very well organized and brought in group. They celebrated every tackle, every save, every block, every moment it the game. They were together and they deserved it. So, credit to them and we will move on and try to bounce back."
Winthrop was a given a red card in the 13
th minute and played the majority of the match with 10 players. The Eagles recorded two goals in the first half beginning in the 6
th minute by Ricardo Ferreira. Bryan Marshall added his strike in the 27
th minute. The second half of the match saw five goals scored in total as Winthrop added to their lead in the 55
th minute as Nick Guido put in a long goal from the center. The Runnin' Bulldogs then cut into the lead as
Jaylen Orr scored his second goal of the season in the 61
st minute. He was followed shortly thereafter in the 64
th minute as
Caio Hughes score on a long cross that made its way into the net. Ricardo Ferreira scored his second of the night to extend the lead back to two goals. Hughes went on the score his second of the night in the 78
th minute with another long crossing goal. GWU pressed the attack late earning a total of 11 shots on goal in the match. Winthrop held on to their one goal lead until the end of 90 minutes.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 27 when they travel to Raleigh, N.C. to play the Wolfpack of NC State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
