Gardner-Webb men’s basketball remembers former head coach Jim Johnson

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University men's basketball program is saddened to learn of the passing of former head coach and university professor, Jim Johnson. Johnson passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at the age of 76.

"We are saddened to learn of the passing of former GW basketball coach and longtime GW math teacher, Jim Johnson.", said head coach Tim Craft. "He impacted many students on this campus, and will be greatly missed. Please remember his family in your prayers during this time. Coach Johnson was so encouraging and supportive of our program. I always loved my conversations with him over the years. My heart goes out to his family, former players and students. I also know he is now in a better place with his Lord and Savior."

Jim Johnson helmed the Gardner-Webb men's basketball program from 1990 to 1995. He also served on campus as a professor of mathematics following his time as head coach. During the 1991-1992 season, Johnson guided the Runnin' Bulldogs to a 19-11 overall record, the South Atlantic Conference regular season championship, and was named SAC Coach of the Year.

Prior to Gardner-Webb, Johnson served as Head Basketball Coach at Spartanburg Methodist Junior College for 11 seasons. He won five championships and four coach of the year honors during his time at SMC.

His coaching successes established Johnson as one the top coaches in the Carolinas, gaining him recognition by his colleagues as an excellent teacher and coach whose teams were known for their hard-nosed and determined style of play.

Johnson was also actively involved in furthering the lives of his players off the basketball court. He operated his programs aligned with Christian faith and made sure his players understood that education was their primary purpose for attending Gardner-Webb.

Johnson was also active in church, civic, and community affairs. He was a member of the Popular Springs Baptist Church and the Boiling Springs Rotary Club.

Johnson was a graduate of Furman University and earned his master's degree at the University of South Carolina.

He is survived by his wife Linda Kay, his daughters Carrie and Anna, and his son Craig.

Johnson's funeral will be held Sunday, Sept. 10. A celebration of life service will be at 2:30 p.m. at Poplar Springs Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 3:30-5 p.m. in the Family Life Center of the church.
