Gardner-Webb Earns 1-0 Shutout Victory Over VMI

Runnin’ Bulldogs earn hard fought win after lightning delay

BOILING SPRINGS, NC – The Gardner-Webb University women's soccer team shutout the Keydets of VMI following a two hour and 45-minute lightning delay. GWU was lifted to the victory by solid play despite the wet conditions.

"It was great to get the shutout, and the girls gave a big effort tonight.", said coach Murphy. "Especially after just sitting around. After a delay they came back really focused and just worked really hard."

Sophomore forward Megan Gettys scored her second goal of her season and career for the 'Dawgs in the 49th minute sending the ball across and into the bottom left corner past VMI's Jillian Hall. In her second start of the season, freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Liu made eight saves on her way to the first shutout of her career for Gardner-Webb.

"Steph came up big with that save to keep the shutout for us.", coach Murphy added. "And Megan of course. She made no mistake about the goal, so it was nice to get that."

The next match for the Runnin' Bulldogs is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 10 at 5:00 p.m. when they face the Wofford College Terriers on the road.
