Gardner-Webb Track & Field Continues Its Strong Performances at VMI Invitational

Freshman Anna Spencer sets a new school mark in winning the women's 300-meter dash

LEXINGTON, VA – It was another record-setting weekend for several members of the Gardner- Webb University indoor track and field squad as the Runnin' Bulldogs continued their string of strong performances at the 30-team VMI Invitational hosted by the Virginia Military Academy last Friday (1/26) and Saturday (1/27).

Among the many highlights for the 'Dawgs was freshman Anna Spencer setting a new school record in the 300-meter dash as she captured the event with a time of 41.07. Spencer also put her name on the program's Top 10 list in the 200-meter as she finished eighth overall (25.48) which is No.7 all-time in the Gardner-Webb annals.

Junior's Deborah Marlow and Traci Cross also put their names on the program's record list in the 60-meters dash. Marlow's time of 7.65 puts her No.2 all-time in school history which was good for fourth place overall at VMI.

Cross, who finished in the Top 10 last weekend at No.10 (7.80), is right behind Marlow at No.3 on the Runnin' Bulldogs all-time list.  

In the 800 meters, sophomore Jessica Perriello moved up to No.7 in program history as she turned in a time of 2:18.78 which was good for fourth overall at VMI.

In the women's field events, graduate student Karmen Taylor finished second overall (16.87m) in the weight throw.
Freshman Zoie Johnson was fifth (15.20m) in the weight throw and sophomore Maddison Boyd sixth (15.08m) overall for the 'Dawgs.
 
Sophomore Jada Pittman took over sole possession of fifth place all time in the long jump as her 5.58m performance was good for sixth place at VMI.
 
Senior Alyiah Eugene finished in the Top.10 at No.10 (5.41m) in the long jump which is now No.9 all-time at Gardner-Webb.

Eugene also took fourth overall in the high jump (1.57m), followed by freshman Teandra Clemmons, who was sixth (1.52m) overall, rounding out the strong women's field performances for the Runnin' Bulldogs last weekend.

On the men's side, freshman Nathan Cremin, who set a school record (1:23.05) in the 600-meter dash a week ago at the JDL Fast Track Invitational in Winston Salem, followed that by capturing the 800-meter dash at VMI in 1:53.45.

Sophomore TJ Peebles placed third (8.30) in the 60-meter dash to move into a fifth-place tie on Gardner-Webb's all-time list while senior Noah Meadows moved to No.4 in the 200-meter dash as he finished ninth overall (22.11) at VMI.

In the men's field events junior Jacoby Johnson had another good showing as he placed third in the shot put (49' 01") and ninth overall in the weight throw (48' 02").

In the men's high jump Gardner-Webb freshman Johnny Timpson finished fifth overall (6' 01") to rounds out the list of strong performances by the "Dawgs in Lexington last weekend.

"The women had an outstanding meet, the men were very strong as well," said Gardner-Webb coach Greg Thiel. "We're at a good place and are continuing to train and get ready for conference play. We anticipate that there many more good things ahead."  

Up Next – Gardner-Webb will compete at the South Carolina Invitational hosted by the University Of South Carolina in Columbia, SC on Saturday February 4thth.
