Runnin’ Bulldogs Drop Big South Opener at High Point

Badmus tallies a career high 20 points in loss to the Panthers

HIGH POINT, N.C.  – The Gardner-Webb University men's basketball team fell in their Big South Conference opener on the road at High Point University Saturday afternoon by a final score of 85-76. Junior forward Ademide Badmus led the Runnin' Bulldogs in scoring on his way to a career day despite the loss.

"We really did some good things on the offensive end tonight, but we just couldn't get enough stops down the stretch defensively.", said coach Craft. "A couple offensive rebounds that we gave up late were critical. They have a lot of offensive weapons on the floor out there and Miles and Gizza were outstanding."

"Ademide has worked very hard since he's been at GWU.", added coach Craft. He's been playing with a lot of confidence of late. It's great to see his hard work paying off."

The High Point Panthers got off to a fast start leading by as many as 11 in the opening nine minutes of the ballgame. From being down 21-10, the Runnin' Bulldogs battled back behind a pair of first half 10 point performances by Badmus and Julien Soumaoro. The 'Dawgs closed the gap to just two by the half as High Point held a 39-37 lead.

Gardner-Webb was able to keep the scoring within one to two possessions for most of the second half. With 11:13 left to play, a three-point play from Isaiah Richards allowed the Runnin' Bulldogs to take a 57-56 lead. Late game scoring from High Point's Miles Duke allowed them to quickly regain the lead and hang on to the lead. Late game fouls to stop the clock gave HPU an eventual 85-76 win.
