Men's Soccer Battles to 2-2 Draw With Presbyterian
October 12, 2024 | Men's Soccer
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Junior defender Leo Andrade ripped home a goal in the 73rd minute while helping the Gardner-Webb University men's soccer team earn a draw with Presbyterian after being down two goals in the second half on Saturday evening at Greene-Harbsion Stadium.
The Runnin' Bulldogs controlled the contest on the scoresheet, posting 20 shots compared to just eight for the Blue Hose. Graduate forward Lucas Mauro led the way for GWU with a season-high eight shots, including four on goal. Junior forward Elias Khodri added three shots of his own.
The early portion of the game was controlled by the defenses as each team looked to establish rhythm on the plus side of the field. Although Gardner-Webb was able to post several shots during the onset, it would be Presbyterian that took a 1-0 lead at the break following a header into the back of the net by Damorney Hutchinson in the 33rd minute.
Mauro was poised to knot the score at the 56:27 mark of the second half, but his strike would be denied PC's Loan Marin. That missed opportunity proved costly as the Blue Hose doubled the lead in minute 61 after a penalty kick goal by Carson Griffith.
Gardner-Webb earned a PK of its own less than two minutes later, but Marin came up with another magnificent save while preserving the two-goal lead for the Blue Hose.
However, the persistence of the Black and Red paid off in the 64th minute when sophomore defender Max Fisher blasted the rock into the back of the net, trimming the deficit to 2-1. The Runnin' Bulldogs continued to dominate possession and would eventually tie the contest at 2-2 following an incredible goal off the right boot of Andrade from 35 yards out.
The Runnin' Bulldogs gave their best effort to win the game with a flurry of shots in the final minute of the match, but four shots within seconds of each of other were all denied access to the goal, ending the contest with a 2-all draw.
Gardner-Webb will return to action Tuesday, October 15, traveling to Johnson City, Tenn. to face East Tennessee State at 6 p.m.
