Women's Soccer Downed At Home Against UNC Asheville

BOLING SPRINGS, N.C. - A goal in each half on Wednesday night saw visiting UNC Asheville take the three points in Big South play, as the Gardner-Webb University women's soccer team fell 2-nil at Greene-Harbison Stadium

On a cold night in western North Carolina, it was UNC Asheville finding a hot start. After a couple early chances went just missing, the Bulldogs grabbed the lead inside eight minutes, using a well placed shot into the upper corner for a 1-nil lead.

The 'Dawgs did have chances of their own early, but it would be a contest with the best of those few and far between early on, with UNC Asheville holding just a 6-4 lead in shots through 45 minutes.

The action did pick up after the break with GWU out firing. Freshman defender Anya Tribune featured well in the attacking play, with two early second half shots testing the UNC Asheville back line. Tribune finished the game with a team-high three shots in 68 minutes off the bench

Alva Jonsson had perhaps the best chance either team had the entire night in the 62nd minute. Through traffic, Jonsson fired from distance into the upper left corner of the goal, producing a top drawer save from UNC Asheville goalkeeper Gracie Murray.

With Gardner-Webb getting players forward in search of an equalizer, UNC Asheville was able to attack on the break and capitalized in the 88th minute. After a brilliant initial save from sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Liu who pushed one of her seven saves on to the post, a free attacker came running in after the loose ball to double the Bulldogs lead.

The visitors were able to run the remaining minutes out, as Gardner-Webb fell 2-nil.

The Runnin' Bulldogs now turn attention to non-conference play for an evening, taking on SC State away from home on Friday, October 18th.
