BOILING SPRINGS. N.C. – The Gardner-Webb (9-3-3, 4-0-2) men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw versus UNC Asheville (6-3-4, 2-2-2) on Tuesday evening inside Greene-Harbison Stadium. The Runnin' Bulldogs surrendered the lead with just eight seconds left on the clock.
Sophomore defender
Max Fisher led the way for GWU, posting a team-high three shots, including the lone goal of the game for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Junior forward
Elias Khodri added two shots of his own.
Gardner-Webb was dominant on the offensive end early in the contest, but could not translate the momentum into the game's first goal. However, junior keeper
Alan Horrocks stood tall in goal for the home team, collecting a series of saves. Including a brilliant penalty kick save to keep the game scoreless heading in the half.
It appeared that UNC Asheville would swing the momentum in its favor following a red card for the Runnin' Bulldogs. However, in the 60
th minute, Fisher took a gorgeous pass from graduate forward
Lucas Mauro before finding the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Gardner-Webb defense held strong for the majority of the second half, but a frantic series in the final 10 seconds left the visiting Bulldogs with the game-tying goal.
Gardner-Webb will close out the regular season on Friday, October November 1, traveling to face league-leading High Point. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
