SPARTANBURG, S.C. - In a game that featured five combined goals on Saturday afternoon, the Gardner-Webb University soccer team fell in a road contest at Wofford, final score 3-2
The Runnin' Bulldogs controlled the ball and the majority of chances, out-shooting Wofford 19-6 overall and 8-4 in shots on goal, but it would be the Terriers who took advantage of their opportunities and held on late after initially taking a two goal lead into halftime. In fact, it was the very first two shots of the entire game from the home side that got them on the board. Wofford scored in the 37th and 43rd minutes to take a 2-nil lead.
Despite the deficit however, the Runnin' Bulldogs did work themselves back in the game and that reward came in the 77th minute. Seconds after winning a corner, graduate forward
Lucas Mauro found freshman defender
Jalen Moore who got GWU on the board, making it a 2-1 game with nearly a quarter of an hour left to play.
Minutes after drawing within a goal, the Runnin' Bulldogs were forced to defend a Wofford penalty kick. After converting, the Terriers went in front 3-1. The Wofford spot-kick came in the 79th minute, just 1 minute, 28 seconds after GWU found its opening goal.
But once again, the Runnin' Bulldogs pushed up the field and were rewarded with a second goal with time still to push for another. Junior defender
Leo Andrade struck in the 88th minute with a solo effort, his third goal of the campaign to bring the score back to 3-2.
One more chance fell to Gardner-Webb with under a minute to go, but it was off the mark and Wofford was able to run out the final seconds as GWU fell 3-2.
The Runnin' Bulldogs now turn attention back to Big South play, traveling to Winthrop on Tuesday night, October 8th.
